Randy Turner Captures 2008 Clark's Car Crushing Pro Stock Championship
by Ken Minott

Two drivers with contrasting styles rolled into their final points race of the season with the Wiscasset Raceway Prostock championship on the line and just 8 points separating them. Point leader Randy Turner of Freedom had been the steady competitor all season with the most top five's in the class but no finishes better than 3rd. Jeff Burgess of East Madison came in as the division's hottest driver having won three of the last five races to bring him into contention. While both came in with a Unity Raceway championship on their resume, both were in search of their first career Prostock / Super Late Model title at Maine's fastest track.

The championship finale in the Clark's Car Crushing Prostock division highlighted a full card of action Sunday afternoon at Wiscasset Raceway under sunny skies and framed by a "picture-postcard" backdrop of fall foliage in the hills surrounding the track. Turner managed to add 2 points to his lead following heat race action and knew he simply needed to finish (once again) in the top five in the 50 lap feature, regardless of what Burgess would do, to secure the title. Bar Harbor's "Big John Phippen also came into the feature with an outside shot himself, just 18 points behind Turner. All three drivers would start the feature in the lead pack, lined up in the front three spots on the outside row. Phippen took the lead from pole sitter Gary Smith on lap four and withstood three early cautions, but Smith took the lead back on lap 18, while Burgess and Turner held strong in the top five as well. Burgess moved up to second on lap twenty and stalked the leader for the next ten laps. In the meantime, veteran Charlie Colby made a strong charge up the outside lane from his 11th starting position into the top five. The points chase tightened up a bit more following a pair of lap 30 restarts. Burgess took the lead from Smith and Turner slipped back to 5th at the same time, dropping the interval to just 2 points (as they ran). As Burgess continued to hold off Smith and Colby over the next ten laps, Turner had a rearview mirror full of Chuck Colby who pressured him for 5th.  The race and the season were setting up for an exciting finish and the possibility of a tie, but lap forty changed everything. Coming out of turn four Burgess lost control all on his own and came spinning onto the front stretch bringing out the 6th caution of the race and dealing a fatal blow to his title hopes. On the ensuing restart Charlie Colby took the lead and pulled away to the win over Smith. It was Colby's first win of the season. Smith settled for second, matching his best effort of the season and Winterport's Ryan Deane took advantage of the final restart to sneak in and grab the third place finish. Turner held on for his division high 9th top five of the season in 14 (points paying) races. With Phippen finishing 6th and Burgess 9th, Turner wrapped up the title by 18 points. Burgess reflected on his late-race misfortune and his season afterwards with Travis Barrett of Green-White-Checker. "I guess I just got loose," said Burgess. "Trying too hard I guess... I was protecting the bottom and she came around in a hurry. She didn't do that all day." Burgess added, "We did everything we thought we needed to do, but it just wasn't enough. It's not too disappointing. We really only had one good month and a half, so in a six month season to only have a good month and a half and still end up second in the standings, that's pretty good." Turner had a different perspective on Burgess. "I hate to say it, but it was kind of a sigh of relief" referring to seeing Burgess spin. "I've only won one championship before, but I didn't have nearly this much pressure on me. This year, there was just so much competition, and Jeff was so fast that he put so much pressure on me the last few weeks." Both drivers knew it was Turner's consistency throughout the year that sealed the title. "First part of the year, I didn't care about points," said Turner. "I tried not to think about the championship until the last month, the last four weeks. I wanted to win this race, but they kept telling me on the radio to take it easy." Sunday November 9th at the Wiscasset Raceway award banquet, the 27-year-old Turner will collect a $10,000 paycheck from track owner Doug White as Wiscasset Raceway's track champion.

In other action on the program, Sidney's Chris Thorne moved a step closer to his second straight title in the Smith Construction Late Model Sportsman division. The defending champ started from the pole position for the 30-lap feature and pulled away for an easy flag to flag caution free victory. It was his division high 5th win of 08' and lengthened his lead over rookie Adam Chadbourne to 48 points heading into next weekend's season finale. Darren Ripley of Appleton, fresh off his Sportsman Nationals victory the week before, moved up from his 10th starting position to 2nd but never got the caution he needed to challenge Thorne. Bill Pinkham of Wiscasset started outside the front row and turned in his best finish of the year in 3rd.

Oakland's Mike Landry took the victory in the 25 lap feature for the Unicel / Budweiser Super Streets. It was his class-high 6th victory of the season and provided a small measure of redemption after loosing the race to Ripley the previous week despite having the dominant car. Shawn Austin of Norridgewock came into the weekend trailing point leader Allan Moeller for the division's top spot and gained a few points with his 2nd place finish. Top rookie Kevin Douglass continued his late season surge and picked up the 3rd place finish. Moeller finished 5th and will bring a 40 point lead over Austin into the finale on October 19th.

Multi-time champion Maurice Young all but wrapped up his record 7th track title by taking the victory in the 20-lap feature for the Keystone Automotive Strictly Streets. The victory, his track-high 12th of the season, was also a milestone for the veteran from Windsor. It marked the 60th win of his career at Wiscasset Raceway. Ed Peirpont, Young's closest pursuer in the points chase followed him to victory lane to claim the 2nd place trophy. Wiscasset's Chuck Colby finished 3rd.

Derek Cook of Wilton came into town and outraced the home track top guns in the Aable Autoparts Mini Stocks 20 lap feature. The division's top two drivers joined him in victory lane to claim the other two trophies. Runner-up Ryan Ripley of Thomaston finished 2nd with point leader Dylan Lancaster of Skowhegan 3rd. 17 year old Lancaster is poised to capture his first Mini Stock crown heading into the season finale.

In the White & Bradstreet Mini Trucks Kevin Oliver of Gray finally delivered on a five year push for his first career win, out racing Chris Doucette to the checkers. The were joined in victory lane by Jason Giggey of Unity who closed up the points battle with leader James Swan to 16 points with one more race to go.
