RIPLEY TAKES SPORTSMAN NATIONALS WIN AT WISCASSET RACEWAY

by Ken Minott

Mike Landry's pain turned out to be Darren Ripley's gain on a cool Sunday evening at Maine's "Center of Speed". Landry had the dominant car in the 100 lap Ray Haskell Ford Fall Brawl Sportsman Nationals at Wiscasset Raceway and the biggest win of his career was within his grasp as the signal went up for two laps to go. But strange things happen late in big races and a caution for a minor spin back in the field would quickly change everything. After starting 7th in the 32 car field and leading the next 78 laps, easily out running Ripley on each of several restarts, he had to deal with just one more caution as RJ Austin lost control and spun into the front stretch wall. But it was at that moment that he was dealt the fatal blow of bad luck as a faulty distributor and ignition issues shut his car down out of turn four as the cars circled the track under caution. Some people had speculated that the leader had actually run out of gas with the main event approaching two hours, but that was not the case. Ripley, who had made an impressive dash into contention himself moving from his 25th starting position into the top five by the quarter mark of the race, would inherit the lead with a green white checker finish in the making. Landry made an attempt to re-enter the race prior to the final restart but an electrical fire finally put an end to his night and he would drop all the way to a 17th place finish.  Ripley easily disposed of pole sitter Nate Weston on the final restart and then held off Dan McKeage to take the checkers by a car length. The race winner was as surprised as everyone by his sudden change in luck. "I was (smiling). I was settled on second." said Ripley "(Landry) had me covered. I don't know what happened." For Ripley it was just another victory in a career that qualifies him as one of the most dominant big event racer's in Wiscasset's history. He would pocket nearly $10,000 for his efforts Sunday. Dan McKeage would take home the runner-up trophy after running most of the race with a broken sway bar and Weston finished 3rd after running in the top five the entire race. Adam Chadbourne and Allen Moeller completed the top five finishing order. 46 cars attempted to qualify for the main event which highlighted day two of the track's big double header weekend.

The 100 lap feature for the Keystone Automotive Strictly Streets was a caution filled affair but there was little doubt, short of equipment malfunction, who was in charge. Multi-time champion Maurice Young of Windsor started 9th in the 32 car field and took the lead following a lap 20 restart. From there he survived 11 more cautions and pulled away to his 11th victory of the 2008 season. Mike Short of Auburn chased Young for much of the race and would settle for 2nd. Lyman McKeage of Gorham lurked just outside the top five and then made a late charge to secure the 3rd place trophy. Pole sitter Ed Pierpont of Jefferson and Larry Emerson of Durham rounded out the top five. Young would pocket nearly $3000 for his efforts and has now turned in dominant wins in the last five extra distance races for Wiscasset's Street Stocks.

In the 50 lap support feature for the "Real Stock" Mini Stock Nationals, Oxford driver Adam Polvinen took on the top Wiscasset regulars and appeared to have the upper hand as he was first to cross the line under the checkers. However, he would fail post race inspection, handing the victory over to weekly point leader Dylan Lancaster of Skowhegan. Lancaster was back in the field in the 8th position with 20 laps to go but steadily brought himself into contention in the closing laps. The final caution came out with five laps to go. With the shuffle in the final running order, reigning Wiscasset Mini Stock champion Kevin Douglass of Sidney finished 2nd and Ryan Ripley of Thomaston, nephew of Sportsman winner Darren Ripley, took home 3rd. Fellow teens Natasha Dyer of Arrowsic and Tom True of Wiscasset filled out the top five. 17 year old Lancaster, who is looking to wrap up his first career Mini Stock title, pockets nearly $1000 for the biggest win of his career.

Chris Doucette of Sebago withstood a strong challenge from Kevin Oliver, Mark Lucas and Roger Allard to win the 50 lap Mini Truck Nationals feature. For Doucette it was his 8th win of the season. Lucas, who secured the 2008 PASS Modified championship at Wiscasset just a day earlier, jumped into Opie Allard's ride and drove it to the runner-up finish. Opie's dad Roger chased his friend across the stripe to take the 3rd place trophy. Oliver got bumped out of line with two to go, continued racing through the infield access road and came back onto the track in 5th. He would finish in that position just behind Jason Giggey.
